C/M Segments. Auto
A comprehensive list of automobile categories includes body styles like sedans, coupes, convertibles, and SUVs, as well as market segments ranging from microcars to luxury vehicles. Additionally, classifications exist for vehicle purpose (passenger vs. goods) and for specific applications like racing, police, and ambulances.
By Body Style:
Convertibles: Vehicles with a retractable roof.
Crossovers: A blend of SUV and car features.
Hatchbacks: A vehicle with a lift-up rear door providing access to a cargo area.
Sedans: Four-door vehicles with a separate trunk.
SUVs: Sport Utility Vehicles, known for their versatility and off-road capabilities.
Minivans: Large, versatile vehicles designed for passenger transport.
Trucks: Vehicles designed for hauling cargo.
By Market Segment:
Microcars: Very small, fuel-efficient vehicles.
A-segment/City Cars: Small cars designed for urban use.
B-segment/Superminis: Small cars popular in many markets.
C-segment/Compact: Popular size for family cars.
D-segment/Mid-size: Larger family cars.
E-segment/Full-size: Larger, luxury-oriented vehicles.
F-segment/Luxury Saloon: Full-size luxury vehicles.
S-segment/Sports: Vehicles focused on performance.
Other Classifications:
Passenger Vehicles: Buses, cars, and passenger trains.
Goods Vehicles: Lorries, trucks, and other commercial vehicles.
Racing Cars: Vehicles designed for competitive racing.
Police Cars: Vehicles used by law enforcement.

Bio-based polycarbonate sheet, like Lexan, can be formed using similar techniques to traditional polycarbonate, including thermoforming, heat bending, and cold forming. Thermoforming involves heating the sheet and pressing it against a mold, while heat bending uses controlled heat to soften the sheet for shaping. Cold forming, done without heat, allows for slight bending but is limited in the complexity of shapes that can be achieved.
Thermoforming:
Heating: The sheet is heated until it reaches a pliable state, often between 140-155 °C, which is within the glass transition temperature range of Lexan.
Pressing: The heated sheet is pressed against a mold using various methods, including vacuum, pressure, or mechanical pressure.
Cooling: The formed part is cooled and removed from the mold.
Heat Bending:
Heating: Heat is applied to the sheet, often using tools like a heat gun or a heat element, to soften it for bending.Shaping: The softened sheet is then bent or shaped as desired.Cooling: The formed part is allowed to cool and harden.
Cold Forming:
Shaping: The sheet is bent without heating, often in a jig or over a mold.Limitations: This method is generally suitable for creating simple curves and is not as versatile as thermoforming or heat bending.
Additional Forming Techniques:
Line Bending: A narrow, heated strip is used to soften the sheet along a line, allowing for bending without significant thickness loss.Free Forming: High air pressure is used to blow the heated sheet into a dome shape.
Important Considerations:
Glass Transition Temperature:
Exceeding the glass transition temperature (between 140-155 °C for Lexan) can lead to a decrease in the optical quality of the sheet.
Protective Coatings:
When thermoforming Lexan Margard, it's important to consider the effect on protective coatings, which may need to be removed or adjusted during the process.
UV Resistance:
For applications involving prolonged sun exposure, UV-resistant Lexan sheets are available, such as Lexan Clear SL or Clear SL2.
